Flow reflects my learning and exploration of ceramics during my time at Hood College. Throughout this journey, I experimented constantly—manipulating materials, testing different clay bodies and techniques, mixing glazes, and firing every kiln available to me. The processes were not always predictable, and through both successes and failures I learned to work in collaboration with the clay and the fire. The challenges that occur during experimentation continue to drive my practice and keep me creating.

My work is mostly inspired by seashells and includes organic forms that are both functional and sculptural or somewhere inbetween.  At first, porcelain was the obvious choice to imitate seashells. The creamy, smooth clay rolled into a thin slab is both strong and delicate like a shell itself.  The play of light and shadow on a fluid backdrop of white porcelain invites the viewer to investigate not only the form itself but the negative space within and beyond.

In contrast, grog-filled stoneware proved irresistible to carve and became a way to create a heavier, more solid interpretation of a shell.  I intentionally developed varied textures on the exterior to contrast with the glazed interior. Combined with the unpredictability of atmospheric firing, each piece becomes unique and distinctive, inviting the viewer to touch the surface and interact with the curves of the form.

The functional and abstract forms reflect my curiosity with the medium and techniques I continue to explore.   There is always more to discover; therefore there is always more work to be made.
